Marx "Big Joe" 45 cars and a DPU 800!!
Ok so this is my last record attempt! 45 cars and two locomotives! I got the idea from my last video, it was suggested a Distributed Power Unit like the real RRs so gave it a try and it worked great! Both units have reliable reverse units, I tried to put the DPU unit close to the center of the train. (The heavier cars are up front) I added 5 more cars than the last run so unless I expand my layout, it's just about maxed out. Up front is the dual motored custom little Joe. Dual motors makes him "Big Joe" My other little Joe has a single motor but has a knuckle coupler on one end so I instead used my custom Southshore 800. Single motor but certainly capable of pulling more than half this tr...

Marx Little Joe with 40 deluxe cars! A new personal record!
Просмотров 6044 часа назад
Bought 072 curves this spring and hadn't gotten around to seeing if I could break the 36 car pull I did on 060 curves. Instead of 37, decided to just go for it and do 40 cars. Got almost three laps out of it before the cars came uncoupled and derailed. Impressive the Marx scissor couplers would hold together for that many cars! I pulled this train by hand and it's quite a heavy pull but my dual...
Marx smoking Mercury Lightning stripe livery!

Finished my Smoking Mercury! Made all the decals including front herald and side Mercury boards. Painted a tender to match using a six inch shell mounted on a wedge tender frame with scale trucks & wheels. Also made the handrails using orange surveyor flags and cotter pins.
another Lionel MPC era Atlantic with sound of steam & whistle!
Просмотров 1159 часов назад
so I had an extra sound of steam & whistle tender that I sort of Frankenlioneled together using a regular sound of steam chassis and andding a NYC shell from a NYC flyer set. I found this atlantic on ebay. I was only interested in the locomotive but it included the C&O tender which I was also able to get to work by cleaning wheels & axles, roller pickup, and copper strips. I also replaced the m...

Thought I'd run my copper 396 locomotives with the copper queen. 96 degree day outside but basement is a cool & dry 65 degrees, great for running trains!
Marx smoking Mercury project Part 1

After finishing the Copper Queen merc, I started work on this shell that was included when I bought the copper queen. Sanded and primed it, then went to work on mounting the 1666 motor which proved to be a very easy and nice fit! Now to decide on a custom paint scheme! I also provide more information oun installing the motor on my FB custom marx trains page.
Marx Copper Queen Merc & cars

Got an offer from a friend for two Marx Mercury locos. One has the copper queen front end so I cleaned it up with some Mecquires wax. The shell had been painted flat black so I applied some rustoleum clear lacquer just as a temporary fix till I can find a shell with decent original black paint and swap noses. I didn't bend the tabs on the copper nose so it can easily be removed and swapped. Fou...
Lionel MPC Milwaukee Rd passenger train test run with 11 cars
Просмотров 152День назад
Ok so a buddy on FB was telling me his 4-4-2 MPC atlantic wouldn't pull his complete Milwaukee Rd passenger train so I figured as long as I had all my cars out I'd test one of my atlantic MPC eras and see how it would perform. The original loco that came with the set is upstairs in my display cabinet and I was too lazy to fetch it so I grabbed this one (same engine and a sound of steam/whistle ...
Marx Milwaukee Road Customs night!

Running all Milwaukee Road this evening with my two custom built Little Joes and two sets of AA E7s. Pulling baby madison cars as well as some mixed freights. The Little Joes got their name from the Milwaukee Road crews, short for Little Joseph Stalins as these were originally an order for the Soviet Union back in the cold war days of the 1950s that the US gov't cancelled. The controls were sti...
Repairing custom Marx Amtrak E8 & passenger car wiper pickups
Просмотров 10114 дней назад
did some maintenance this evening on my Marx custom phase 2 Amtrak E8 and the cars. Repaired the side stripe that had bubbled up on both sides. Also the cars had worn grooves in the pickup shoes so I filled in the grooves with solder, then sanded smooth. Easy fix and if the solder wears away just fill em in again. Because they are vintage cars, sometimes they get a little rust or corrosion so I...
Marx E7 powered Union Pacific twin spin: Ski Train & UP 951

So I was able to add a few more cars to my DRG&W Ski train to extend it to 10 cars. Both A&B units are powered with Marx power pull motors. MTH madison & streamliner cars in tow. My UP passenger train has the collection of vintage 6000 series Lionel streamliner cars. Only the A unit is powered but the power pull motor easily handles them, a true testament to Marx engineering of this motor consi...
Marx Red Mercury with copper passenger cars
Просмотров 20721 день назад
So I'm slowly trying to piece together a Marx merc copper queen set. Bought the three passenger cars and cleaned them up, got the lights all working. Just got the articulated tender a couple days ago so I dug out this red Merc that was custom painted to run with them. It's the only loco I have with the articulated coupler. I'll be looking to add a copper queen loco sometime in the future, maybe...

I got out my original CB&Q units and repaired some moisture damage on them by making new decals and applying over the old ones, then brushing on some micro-gloss after everything was dry. Put some Santa Fe passenger cars behind them, sort of an after the merger merger
Marx Burlington Northern twin spin! E9 AA & E7AAs

I finished an E9 dummy to complete the set. Again I removed the side square windows, number boards, and front molded mars light to give it the E9 look. Added a 19v LED for headlight using a Lionel roller pickup assembly between the Marx trucks. Also got out my E7 BN units hauling a freight train.
"Flyonel" American Flyer prewar passenger cars with Lionel 1666
Просмотров 306Месяц назад
I found an American Flyer 8 wheel tender to go with some pre-war passenger cars I'd repaired recently. Had to remove a bit of rust and polish all the journal boxes/wheels & handrails. Made some decals for it using windows paint and print shop pro23. Many years ago I bought a 1666 that had paint in really bad shape so I had repainted it. Dug it out and used it to power this train till I eventual...

Very impressive! What a long train! Thanks for sharing!
thanks! Just posted a new one with 2 little joes and 45 cars!
That is a beautiful loco on an equally beautiful layout!
thanks!
Holy Guacamole John, felt like I was waiting at the crossing in Pocono Summit! Awesome video, again thanks for sharing.
thanks!
The locomotive dispatcher should have assigned a DPU to keep the slack tight. This is a prime example why PSR isn't a great idea concerning super long train consists. Never the less that was an excellent performance by the "Little Joe." 😎😹🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚂✝ My good neighbor and friend gave me another Lionel train set. It is a #1629 only cataloged once in 1960. It is in nice shape and I ordered some of the missing parts. A good cleaning and lube brings it back to great looking and performing capability.
wow Gary, I need a good neighbor! Thanks! I thought about putting my other little Joe (with one motor) on the back end sort of as a DPU. May have to try that next!
John, your smoking Mercury looks awesome painted, and that stripe really makes it stand out. I restored a grey Mercury but no striping on the engine. I did put pin striping on the articulated cars.
thanks Steve! Is there a video of your Merc? I'll have to check it out
@@jlebaron1 John, the Mercury is in the "Find Your Key Wind Up Train Challenge" video. It was originally a windup, but I also like to run it with an electric motor. Thank you John, have a great day. -Steve
That’s sharp!
thanks!
A lot of childhood memories here... Thanks for posting!
Didn't know Marx produced copper trains. Had a beat up Marx train set (plastic hand me down) as a teen. Something about Marx though, that stayed with me. Although I model in HO. It's great to know that there are passionate people keeping Marx memories alive. Thank you Fren for sharing your world.
John, looks very nice and smokes well. Interesting cars that its pulling.
thanks Steve! I've been collecting Corning batch containers from diff. manufacturers. I have a premiere one from MTH and another K-line. The other cars just happened to be in reach...
@@jlebaron1 Thats neat John. I have one Owens Illinois hopper car. I worked at that glass factory for the summer when school was out.
@@stevesoscaletrainchannel.1901 that's neat Steve, did you live in Corning? Corning has pretty much gotten out of the glass business
@@jlebaron1 No, I live in Pontiac, Illinois. There is a glass factory about 25 miles away called Owens and it used to be a major supplier of glass bottles. When I saw the Owens Illinois hopper, I thought I should get it. Thank you John.
Eureka! I be one dog gone happy Marx guy.
I am!
Great collection of copper Marx John, very sharp.
thanks Steve!
Nice to see these beauties still running!
thanks!
Wait I think I can answer my own question --- I don't remember ever seeing you do a rock island rocket scheme--- you know like the Peoria rocket or quad cities rocket-- rock island had Maroon and silver e7s hmmmm 😁😁😁
yeah I haven't done that particular scheme though I have done the Independence E8 and dressed up a pair of Marx originals by adding dual headlights and a front herald.
Is there a passenger train scheme you don't have???😂😂😂😂 --- it's cool I like passenger trains---- you must have a whole another house to store everything 🤣🤣🤣-- nice work I enjoy what you do
thanks sp much!
Another great project John. I am getting ready to redo a red mercury set
thanks Gman! looking forward to seeing your merc!
Looking good 👍🏻
thanks!
It’s a beauty!
thanks!
That's a lot of cars for a little locomotive. I have a couple and they do pull real well. Might be traction issue with the other fellows from track to tires that compromised his.
Yeah traction tire is my guess, sometimes adjusting the little copper wipers that rub against the axles (for ground to the lights) need a little adjusting or some light grease. Easy to forget these cars are 50 years old now!
Looks like fun, have a great weekend 👍🏻
thanks, you too!
That is an impressive consist. More than likely the traction tire needs to be replaced. The MPC era passenger cars don't weigh as much as the post war cars from the 1950's and 1960's so the 4-4-2 shouldn't have any trouble hauling your friend's consist. Incidentally, my neighbor gave me a box of Lionel trains in very rough shape, loco and whistling tender inoperative, trucks oxidized, shells filthy, etc. The set was a 1515 WS from 1954. A few prayers, much elbow grease, WD40, contact cleaner, new wires soldered, etc. has brought this set back to life. The loco is a 2065 Hudson, messed up E unit, corrosion, etc. I don't like working on E units but I got it repaired and this loco zips around the track. It took me about a week and a half to work on this project but it was worth it. 😎🚂🚃🚃🚃✝
Thanks Gary! There's much satisfaction in restoring one of those old sets to operating condition again, glad you were able to get that set running! Is there a video of it anywhere?
@@jlebaron1 No. I don't have the capability to make videos.
Great job can your your words to sing with beautiful Jesus is Lord amen
thanks so much!
John, your beautiful custom creations are fun to watch. The green flatcar with yellow spools really stands out and is attractive. Very nice work.
Steve thanks so much. I made clay molds and poured resin to make the spools, brake wheels, and truck covers on that car!
@@jlebaron1 Wow, that is amazing John, very creative.
Looks like you’re having fun! Thanks for sharing 👍🏻

Great job on all of them, especially the little joes!
thanks so much!
John, thanks for sharing your maintenance tips and running your great looking Amtrak.
yer welcome Steve, thank you!
Nice to see folks ( you ) who do more than just spend money.... u fix & make stuff :)
I’ve had a problem with bubbling of red spray paint.
yellow seems to be another problem color too.
@@jlebaron1 yep, I sprayed red over yellow and it was a disaster.
